How to Achieve Higher Per-Partner Incomes with Non-Lawyer Management
Course Description:
There’s a clear correlation between high partner income and the existence of non-lawyer management talent in firms.
In fact, a recent Brand Research Company study indicated the number one factor that separated success from failure among law firms was the presence of non-lawyer C-level executives like COO, CMO, and CIO that were empowered with decision-making authority in their areas.
Although the advantages of bringing in professional managers are clear, many firms still face barriers in making appointments. Most of these concern the partners’ reluctance to let go of the reins, and the perception of the non-lawyer manager being ‘not one of us.’
Yet, economic uncertainty has a growing number of law firms exploring the benefits of appointing non-lawyer managers to not only streamline operations but to better serve their clients.
- Outside Experience. An outsider with experience of other industries can bring a wealth of tried and tested management skills to the law firm.
- Managers manage. That’s what they do. They have a particular skill set, and by the time they have reached a senior level, these competencies will have been honed by years of training, experience and development.
- Managers are not lawyers. The competencies required to become an excellent lawyer are not necessarily the same as those needed to become an excellent manager.
- Increase fee-earnings. Using professional managers to run the support functions of the firm allows fee-earning lawyers to return to what they are trained for - earning fees.
In this must-attend event our experts will explore:
- Pros, cons and considerations for hiring non-lawyers to manage your firm.
- Best practices for getting your top lawyers back to doing what they do best – lawyering.
- How hiring professional managers can achieve higher per-partner income.
During this information-packed session, you’ll also learn:
- Why non-lawyer managers make fiscal sense
- Value of having someone with significant operational/finance expertise in the COO role
- How non-lawyer COOs and CEOs help firms operate more efficiently and increase client satisfaction
- How professional managers can increase per lawyer revenue
- Implications and benefits for firms of all sizes
- How to identify and deal with roadblocks, partners’ reluctance and change
- Which soft skills and attributes to look for when hiring non-lawyers into key roles
